ON WRITING....
You know if you have rhythm or not, so if it don’t fit don’t force it. Forget the contract, forget your peers, and be honest. You must be able to look your writing in the face the next morning.
There are times when the writer has to realise that the spaces between the words can be as important as the words themselves. The poet needs to breath, so do the words.
Dictators know the power of words, this is why they burn books. Writers must understand the power at their fingertips, and black writers in particular must value that work they do.
When I write there is a voice in my head, by the time the words reach the page they are echoes from a source within. I have learnt to get to that source through meditation, not everyone wants to mediate, but everyone can just spend a few moments quietly listening to themselves.
